Sheffield Cricket Lovers' Society Year Book 2026
I found travelling on my own pretty straightforward as I’d researched coach and air travel which are quite cheap in NZ. Short flights are reasonably priced and often used between cities as the railway infrastructure is limited. Accommodation was through booking. com and AirBnb - neither of which burnt a hole in my pocket. Travelling light was key as I knew I could launder my clothes easily; because of the climate I only required shorts, tee shirts and light footwear. I was quoted upwards of £3,000 for a ten day trip but, by shopping around and booking early, I managed a six week trip for approximately £3,500, including flights and accommodation. Another absolute bargain was being able to purchase a five day Test pass for £70, as opposed to the £78 for one day of England against India! I was able to look up three school friends last seen 50 years ago, and a former nursing colleague, who had all emigrated to work in NZ. The Kiwis are very friendly and went out of their way to give directions and help in any way. For ten days I stayed in Island Bay, south of Wellington, with hosts, Francesca and Dolph, a lovely couple who let me share their home. They were very informative about the local area, culture and local politics, and I intend to stay with them again in the near future. Their home is on the beachfront and it was brilliant to enjoy breakfast overlooking the sea, watching the joggers pound the road along the bay. Combining sightseeing with cricket in a stunning environment was thoroughly enjoyable, and I shall return for the next tour - hopefully fully retired and able to stay even longer. With Francesca and Dolph BARGAIN BUY! 39
